How to Install Excellent Systems Ramp Kits

Excellent Systems kits are the ideal product to overcome small obstacles safely and easily. Each kit comes with several pre-assembled layers and can be adjusted to suit a range of heights. No matter your experience, ramps are designed to be buildable by most people who enjoy DIY installations.

Here is how it’s done!

Measure Your Threshold

Before you buy an Excellent Systems Ramp kit, platform or quickramp, you need to know the height of your threshold. You can measure by either using a ruler or we have a tool in our store that you can order that is designed specifically for measuring thresholds called the Ramp-o-meter.

Using the ramp-o-meter you simply place the ruler on the ground where your threshold is and push down the measurement slide to the top of the threshold. This will then give you the measurement of your threshold which will line up with one of the Excellent Systems kits. If you need more information on how to use the Ramp-o-meter then you can head to our blog which explains how to use it in more depth. Click here!

Choose Your Kit

After measuring the threshold, browse the different kits we have available on ramps.co.uk. Each kit is labelled with different measurements, for example the Ramp Kit 1 is for thresholds that are between 18mm and 55mm. For example, if your threshold was to be 32mm, you would choose this kit.

The different Excellent Systems kits cover a range of thresholds from 4mm to 199mm. Each kit comes in two width variations: 750mm and 1000mm and there are also two surface variations: the standard holed grip for indoor use and the SureGrip surface for outdoor use.

When purchasing a kit, make sure that the kit’s maximum measurement capability is not too close to your own measurements. Kits often have overlapping size ranges and are easily customisable, so it’s important to leave some extra room for adjustments.
e.g. if your threshold measurement is 86mm don’t get the Ramp Kit 2 (36 – 91mm), instead choose the ramp kit 3 (72 – 127mm).

Likewise for the width option, get the smallest variation capable of fitting your threshold point. Each kit comes in two width variations 700mm and 1000mm. There is no need to buy anything wider than you need.

If your ramp is intended for outdoor use, we recommend the SureGrip surface option, as it provides superior grip in all weather conditions. For indoor use, the standard holed surface is recommended.

Cut Your Kit if Necessary

Your ramp kit will arrive with minimal packaging, making it easy to remove and start installing. Each ramp kit comes in several pre-assembled layers of ramp tiles. You can stack these on top of each other in seconds to get a good visual guide for how your ramp will look when you are done.

If your ramp is too wide to fit your access point, you can cut it to it down to the right size. Excellent Systems can also be cut with saws and grinders to fit round obstacles such as steps and drainpipes.

After measuring the width of your access point and any other immovable obstacles, mark where you want to cut your ramp kit with a pen and start cutting.

Adjust Your Ramp’s Height

Before fixing your ramp in place, press it flush against the threshold to get a visual estimate of how much additional height is needed. If the ramp does not reach the correct level, you will need to use the ramp adjusters.

Each ramp kit includes several adjusters – thin sheets of material that can be inserted between ramp layers to increase the height in 2mm increments.

To use an adjuster, place it between the upper ramp layers and measure how many millimetres of additional height are required to achieve a level transition between the ramp and the landing zone.

If you accidentally remove too much, don’t worry – the adjuster can be used in smaller pieces just as effectively as when it is whole.

Insert the adjuster at the edge of the ramp that rests against the threshold, reposition the top ramp layer over it, and check the height.

If the ramp is still too high, continue removing sections of the next highest adjuster layer until the ramp reaches the correct height

Assemble Your Ramp

Excellent Systems ramp kits are fixed together using a series of different locks and you will only need a rubber mallet to instert the locks.

T-Locks connect 2 flat layers on top of each other. S-Locks connect flat 3 layers. And R-Locks connect ramp layers on top of tiles.

T and S locks can be fixed in any orientation. R-locks, however, must face a certain direction. To correctly orient an R-lock, point the small knob on the cap upwards following the angle of the ramp.

The instructions that come with each ramp kit will tell you where exactly to put the locks. They can be placed in any of the holes across the ramp surface, however it is preferable to position them evenly for the strongest hold and best finished appearance, as the instructions will direct you.

To insert a lock, place it over the chosen hole and use a rubber mallet to hammer it inside. When you are done, the cap should be flush with the surface of the ramp.

Fix Your Ramp in Place

Once all the layers are locked together, it is time to fix the ramp to the floor. To do this, you have two options: stoppers and mounting pads.

Stoppers are small black cylinders of rubber. You insert them on the underside of the ramp, taking care to space them evenly. Stoppers are ideal for holding your ramp via friction to the floor and allowing for the ramp’s easy removal.

Mounting pads provide a sticky grip. They are ideal for marble, wood, and tile floors. To attach them, peel off the tape and insert the pads to the underside of the ramp.

Once either of these two options are complete, place the ramp firmly against the base of the threshold.

Congratulations, you ramp is now ready to use!
